The University of Winchester was established in 1840 as a teacher training college and we have a long history of excellence in higher education.

Placing your career at the heart of your learning

Our courses are professionally-focused, recognising that employability for our graduates is key. We pride ourselves on our innovative and forward thinking teaching, with those teaching you at the forefront of their disciplines. Our dynamic academic environment is made up of over 6400 students studying courses spanning the arts, business, law, sport, humanities, social sciences, education, health and social care.

Scholarships, bursaries and awards

We realise finance is a big part of deciding to study at university. To help fund your studies, as well as recognising your achievements, Winchester offers a comprehensive range of scholarships, bursaries and other awards. There are no repayments and the awards are cumulative so you could be eligible for more than one.

First class facilities

In recent years the King Alfred campus has undergone much change to enhance its facilities. The £6.5 million St Alphege building opened in 2013, as a new state of the art learning and teaching building. Features include 10 new lecture rooms, and a mezzanine floor with open access PC’s. Our Martial Rose Library has over 300, 000 resources available including course-specific reading material, academic journals and DVDs. There are 600 networked PC’s available for students to use across campus including the library, faculty buildings, IT Centre and our social learning spaces, the Learning Café and Kenneth Kettle Building, which offer 24-hour access, comfy seating for group work or relaxing, wireless access and cafes offering a range of hot and cold drinks, meals and snacks.

Campus life

The University spreads across a modern, attractive campus within easy walking distance of the city centre. We have a dedicated, award-winning Student Union offering a diverse and exciting range of extra-curricular activities. Our club venue The Vault often hosts evening entertainment such as comedy nights and quiz nights. You can also join a variety of clubs, associations and societies ranging from book clubs to an Ultimate Frisbee team.

Students can make use of our impressive sporting facilities including the Winchester Sports Stadium at Bar End, open seven days a week. The University Gym, in the Burma Road Student Village is part is split over two floors, with the latest strength and cardiovascular equipment, whilst the Sports Hall is the hub for indoor games such as basketball, volleyball, netball, badminton or squash.

Location, location, location

The University is located in the ancient cathedral city of Winchester, one hour away from London and a 10 minute train journey from Southampton Airport. Winchester itself is one of the most beautiful cathedral cities in England. Relatively small, it combines lively modern city life with historic roots and unspoilt countryside. There are numerous cafés, restaurants, pubs, bars; independent shops and boutiques alongside high street favourites; theatres; a cinema; and many places of interest.
