York St John was founded in 1841. Today 6,500 students from more than 100 countries study at the university. Our 11 acre site is in a beautiful setting facing the world-famous York Minster across the city walls. York St John University is an outstanding university, known for its academic excellence and responsive nature, its strong community spirit and always putting the student at the heart of everything it does.

Originally built around a quadrangle in 1841, York St John's oldest buildings present a striking frontage to the University. Newer buildings added over the past few years provide a wonderful contrast and include De Grey Court and the Fountains Learning Centre which houses the library, IT facilities, Computer Science lab and a modern lecture theatre.

The Foss Building houses our sports hall, a physiology laboratory, a biomechanics lab, a psychology lab, a fitness suite, physiotherapy labs and general teaching rooms.

Other facilities include a dance studio, drama studio, music rooms (both practical and technical), TV and film production facilities, editing suites and dedicated art and design studios. There are a number of catering outlets on campus and the Students' Union has a bar, café, shop and offices on campus.

Over the past ten years the University has invested over £100million in new facilities to develop a well-resourced city centre campus which provides a high quality teaching and learning environment and supports our commitment to an excellent student experience. Recent developments have seen the opening of our new 57-acre Student Sport Park, the creation of new Biomedical Science laboratories and a transformation of the Holgate Student Centre to provide an exceptional ‘one stop shop’ for student services.

95.7% of our graduates are in employment or further study six months after graduation, with 70.7% in graduate jobs. 30% of our research is ‘world-leading’ or internationally excellent’, according to the Research Excellence Framework 2014.

With around 20,000 students and over six million tourists visiting York each year it is a really lively place to be. It's great for nightlife of all kinds and it's fantastic for shopping, with many independent shops. York St John is just minutes away from the city centre, so is perfectly placed for nights out and retail therapy jaunts. It's also steeped in history and there are lots of arts, cultural and visitor attractions to tempt you too!

York is just one and a half hours by train from Manchester, two hours from London and two and a half hours from Edinburgh.
